FYI, this project is a nice example of where I think nipy could be heading:

It offers many features through vtk, itk.  It would be simple to use
this functionality in python, maybe replacing tk with wxWindows.

The bioimagesuite has similar functions to 'loc3djr' of pbrain. It has
DTI tools, segmentation and registration tools (including an
implementation of Studholm et al.).  I don't see that it has any fMRI
analysis or other modalities apart from DTI.  Most of the processing
features are based on ITK.
